Non-COVID World: Gateshead mum pays heartbreaking tribute to daughter, 19, who died after brave cancer fight

Megan Kelly, of Sunniside, Gateshead, was diagnosed with soft cell Ewing Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, in July 2019.

She went through intense chemotherapy, two operations and 32 rounds of radiotherapy and was even given the all-clear last summer.

At the time, she rang the bell at the Teenage Cancer Unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle to mark the moment.

However, the cancer returned a few months later and Megan’s condition deteriorated. She died in December, aged 19, leaving her family and friends devastated.

“I didn’t know really how strong and resilient she was until she was diagnosed with cancer. The things that she went through – she had some terrible infections and so many blood transfusions. The chemotherapy was horrendous.

“She had really bad days when she would cry but as soon as someone came in, she would put a smile on her face. She was just so strong.”
